Thurs. 06/03/2010 - Chelsea Gallery Hopping

Today, I went to Chelsea. Mostly from 20th to 24th Street between 10th and 11th Avenue. Chelsea broadly includes Meatpacking District as well, so it was a sequel trip from the other day's one, but just more toward to north. Chelsea became a center of NY Art starting from 1990s. Many of art galleries moved here from Soho and now, it has about 370 galleries around the area.

I managed to visit about 30 galleries, and they were the ones within only those 4 blocks. And I was glad I pulled myself together nicely today, because I felt like I was an Art Dealer trying to pick some pieces for my clients.

Fortunately most galleries allowed me to take pictures. But my camera or I didn't take great ones. I totally feel for better camera now and Mac with Photoshop!!!

{Kiki Smith, Lonestar Exhibition at The Page Gallery}

{Raphaele Shirley, Light Shots at Chelsea Art Museum}

These two were also shown at Chelsea Art Museum as well, but I didn't get the name of the artist. I also couldn't find it at the museum's website.

{Jean Miotte, The Gesture Within Exhibition at Chelsea Art Museum}
BTW, all the galleries are free, except Chelsea Art Museum. But today was free. (Just with donation, and yes, I donated!)

This is not an Art. It's just my picture. It is one of windows of Balenciaga store. It has this reflective yellow panel mounted from inside of window, and it reflects objects and makes almost an Art. I thought this might be the intention of this window so I will credit myself.
{Lace Edge, Untitled}

{Alison Shots, Six Hyperbolic Horizon Lines #4 at Project Room}

{Thomas Eggerer, The Rules of the Fence Exhibition at Friedrich Petzel Gallery}

Again, this is not a real Art. I saw a sculpture very very similar like this, mocking some of Contemporary Arts being that anything an artist throws become an Art and people pretend to know what the piece is about. Some cases, I think this is true. But again, Art is Art because it's not really about communication, but it's about expression of an artist's own idea. And sometimes, the idea doesn't need to be understood by anyone but the artist himself/herself.

{Heather Rowe, Trouble Everyday at D'Amelio Terras Gallery}

{Anne Truitt, White: Four and other wood sculptures at Mattew Marks Gallery}

I gathered all the press releases from the galleries (but most of them don't have pictures on), and wrote down names of artists, but I can't remember where I saw these two......

{Gene Davis, Saratoga Springboard at Ameringer/McEnery/Yohe}
These were one of my favorites, and I was lucky to see these because the show just opened today.

Gagosian has two locations at Chelsea. One on 21st Street and one on 24th Street. They don't allow photography, and the 21st one, I even had to check my bag. But both locations are having one of the greatest shows among all other galleries. Actually Gagosian always has one of best and comprehensive shows. One of my favorite was Damien Hirst show. First of all, he is my favorite (or one of favorite) artist and I could see more works here than in London.
{Claude Monet, Late Work Exhibition at Gagosian Gallery on 21st Street}

{Roy Lichtenstein, Still Lifes Exhibition at Gagosian Gallery on 24th Street}

{Gagosian Gallery, 24th Street Location}

{Uta Barth, ...To Walk Without Destination and To See Only To See Exhibition at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery}
I liked these pieces. And later I tried the same picture as the artist! (The feet and shadow part)

{Mark Di Suvero, Totems at Paula Cooper Gallery}

{Mark Di Suvero, Nova Albion at Paula Cooper Gallery}

{Rodney Graham, Music and Dance Exhibition at 303 Gallery}

{Marco Maggi, Color Hotbed at Cueto Project}

{Jesus Rafael Soto, Genesis at Cueto Project}

Another one I can't remember the name of artist and gallery. Anyway, the shadow here is not shadow. It's already printed on the paper and when you take picture, it shows like shadow.

{Stuart Cumberland, CMYK-300-3 at Nicolas Robinson Gallery}

{Stuart Cumberland, (C)M(Y)300 240M-1 at Nicolas Robinson Gallery}

{Richard Huges, Dead Flies}
This one, I missed the gallery name that it's having Richard Hugues show...

{Tucker Nicolas at Ziehersmith}
Honestly I didn't so much like his wok...

But this show was very interesting. It's a group show and each of the piece in a single room is sold separately.
{Make Yourself At Home at 7Eleven Gallery}

{Jim Kempner Fine Art}
Jim Kempner Fine Art is also famous for the building itself which is designed by architects Smith & Thomson.

{Eteri Chkadua, Fear at Max Lang}

I saw a real drawing of Yoshimoto Nara's mean girt at Max Lang. I love this angry girl!

{Michael Coffey, Ebb & Flow Exhibition at Sebastian+Barquet}

{Julian Faulhaber, Studio at Hasted Hunt Kraeutler}

{Julian Faulhaber, Kabinen(Cabins) at Hasted Hunt Kraeutler}
I wanted to buy it, if I can ever afford it!

{David Salle at Mary Boon Gallery}

{Gregory Crewdson, Untitled(Ophelia) at Luhring Augustine}

{Charlotte Perriand (and Carlo Scarpa), Blue at Josiah Mcelheny}

{Piet van den Boog, How Can Something So Pure...Be So Difficult at Mike Weiss Gallery}
The Painting is intentionally hung off center on the lilac colored wall, and the wall color really enhance the painting.

{T. J. Willcox, The Heir and Astaire Screen #1 at Metro Pictures}

And some mores...

So, here are my versions of "Making Journey Following My Own Shadow"
